More students are choosing aviation at Metropolitan State University of Denver as demand for trained professionals continues to shape the industry. The university’s Aviation and Aerospace Science program has become its second most popular major. Its growth also reflects how today’s aviation careers extend well beyond the cockpit.
Nearly 800 students are enrolled in MSU Denver’s Aviation and Aerospace Science program this fall, according to the university.
Over the past decade, the department has increased its course offerings by 52% to accommodate rising demand. The program now prepares students for professional flight, air traffic control, airport operations, aviation management and aerospace careers.
That range is central to the program’s appeal. MSU Denver offers professional flight and operations concentrations alongside an FAA partnered Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative, giving students multiple routes into aviation.
Its facilities include flight and air traffic control simulators, while industry connections provide opportunities with airports, government agencies and aviation companies.
Kiha Sutta, associate director of community engagement and administration for the program, said students are being prepared for careers “across sky and space,” reflecting an industry where technical expertise increasingly intersects with operations, safety and technology.
For students who once saw aviation as a distant ambition, programs like MSU Denver’s are turning that ambition into a structured professional pathway.
The larger story is not simply how many students are entering aviation, but how many different futures now await them once they arrive.
