The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 846 will host its annual Planes and Pancakes event from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 26 at the Wayne County Airport, 6020 N. Honeytown Road, Smithville.
Chapter members will display their aircraft, and additional planes are expected to fly in for the event. Aircraft on display will include factory-produced planes such as Cessnas, classic aircraft and planes built by chapter members. The Wayne County Radio Control Club also will present radio-controlled aircraft.
A pancake breakfast will be served throughout the morning, regardless of weather. The meal will include pancakes, sausage, eggs and coffee or juice. Proceeds will support Chapter 846 activities and scholarship programs.
“The pancake breakfast is our major fundraiser,” event organizer Greg Cantrell said. “It helps support our scholarship programs and our Young Eagles events. Just last month we introduced 71 young people to aviation at the Wayne County Airport during a Young Eagles event. It’s always fun to see some of those same families return to the airport for pancakes and to help support the program.”
Through the Young Eagles program, youth are introduced to aviation by taking a free flight in a member’s aircraft. Chapter 846 held two Young Eagles events this year including one in August at the Wayne County Airport.
Chapter members volunteer their time and aircraft for the program. Since Young Eagles began in 1992, nearly 2.5 million young people have participated in a free introductory flight. Chapter 846 has flown more than 4,000 Young Eagles.
The chapter promotes aviation through scholarships, programs and activities available to those interested in aviation. In addition to participating in the national Young Eagles program, the chapter offers scholarships to young people interested in learning to fly.
Sponsors also have donated to the chapter to support its programs. Chapter 846 thanked Wayne County Airport manager Matt Long and the Wayne County commissioners for allowing the event to be held at the airport.
