The Wayne County Airport recently hosted its annual trick-or-treating event, drawing an estimated 375 trick-or-treaters, making it the airport’s largest turnout yet.
The event, which began in 2020, has grown each year, according to a community announcement.
Trick-or-treaters stop by the Wayne County Airport to collect candy from local pilots during the annual Halloween event. The popular tradition drew about 375 participants this year, with pilots dressing up and handing out treats.
“The pilots really look forward to it — they even dress up and they donate all the candy,” Airport Manager Matt Long said in the announcement.
Coinciding with Smithville’s community Trick-or-Treat night, the event offers families a convenient stop for Halloween festivities.
Children collected candy among the hangars, viewed planes up close and talked with pilots.
“Parents appreciate that it’s safe, fun and educational,” Long said.
The event also serves as an opportunity to showcase the airport’s role in the county, from pilot training and emergency-service support to connecting people and businesses.
