  • To help support a mission of providing expert and compassionate emergency and critical care, Karis Management Group, LLC, in collaboration with Movement Mortgage, presented a $10,000 grant to Boston MedFlight, located at Hanscom Field in Bedford.

For 40 years, Boston MedFlight has provided critical care medical transport by air and ground, caring for more than 6,000 patients annually. As a nonprofit organization, Boston MedFlight provides over $7 million annually in free and unreimbursed care to patients in need with little or no medical insurance.

The organization’s air and ground vehicles serve as mobile intensive care units that are staffed by a critical care nurse and critical care paramedic. Boston MedFlight has collaborated with first-responders, community hospitals and medical centers to provide care to over 100,000 patients since its founding.

The $10,000 award was presented Monday, Aug. 11. Karis Management Group is an appraisal management company headquartered in North Carolina that collaborates with Movement Mortgage to give back to communities.

Movement Mortgage, a $30 billion retail mortgage lender, was founded in 2008 by Casey Crawford, a Super Bowl champion who played tight end for the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2000 to 2003.

Crawford founded the nonprofit Movement Foundation, which is a 49% owner of Movement Mortgage, as a way to invest in schools, communities and ministries around the world. Because the company is 49% owned by the Movement Foundation, about 49% of all of Movement Mortgage’s profits generated nationwide go to the foundation and are then distributed through awards like the one given to Boston MedFlight.

“(Crawford) believes that giving back is the No. 1 creed that everyone should have,” said Bedford Movement Mortgage loan officer George Bissias.

The award to Boston MedFlight was presented by staff from Movement Mortgage’s Bedford office, as well as Shawn Cavalieri, Movement Mortgage’s director of market growth in the Northeast region.

According to Cavalieri, Movement Mortgage employees get to nominate and present $10,000 grants to nonprofits nationwide at least twice per year. Cavalieri nominated Boston MedFlight.

“I’ve always known what they do. I’ve always known how necessary and vital it is, but I never knew that they were a nonprofit,” he said. “I’d say probably 99% of the population has no idea that they need to raise money to keep this thing going, so hopefully this gets word out because it’s such a vital resource for us here, but especially throughout New England.”

Roughly 3,000 employees in Movement Mortgage offices across the country were on board with Cavalieri’s idea.

“The reason that we do this, obviously, is to give back to the communities we serve, but, more importantly, it has nothing to do with us. This is just kind of our way to say thank you for doing what [nonprofits] do, but, more importantly, to have a reason to put the spotlight on [nonprofits],” Cavalieri said.

Bissias said Movement Mortgage has collaborated with Karis Management Group, LLC, to donate about $450 million.
