  • The recent tragic aircraft accident near Washington D.C. has rightly prompted renewed scrutiny of air traffic control (ATC) staffing and technology. While sensible reforms to improve air safety and efficiency are necessary, some policymakers have unfortunately resurrected the idea of privatizing the ATC system — a move that could have unintended and detrimental consequences for rural communities across Mississippi.

As an architect based in Jackson, my projects frequently take me to smaller communities across our state, many of which are underserved by commercial airlines. General aviation airports are essential to my business and many others, providing a reliable transportation link that sustains economic growth and development in rural areas.

Mississippi’s general aviation industry supports over $3 billion in economic activity annually, and more than 13,000 jobs statewide. Beyond economics, these airports offer crucial public services, including emergency medical transport, disaster relief, law enforcement operations, and rapid response in crisis situations. In times of severe weather or other disruptions, general aviation is often the first and only viable option to reach isolated communities.

Privatization of ATC risks inadvertently shifting resources toward major metropolitan areas, reducing critical investments in smaller airports and potentially limiting vital services for our rural communities.

Ensuring aviation safety and efficiency should remain a priority. However, we must preserve congressional oversight to maintain fair access and consistent investment in Mississippi’s rural airports, safeguarding the essential role these airports play in our state’s public safety, health, and economic well-being.
