Letter: We should support reforms that protect access to general aviation

  • The recent tragic aircraft accident near Washington has reignited discussions about air traffic control (ATC) staffing and modernization. While improving safety should be our top priority, some policymakers are once again pushing to privatize the ATC system — an approach that could have unintended consequences for rural communities and businesses like mine.

As the owner of an insurance company and an insurance agency in Utah, I’ve seen firsthand how general aviation connects businesses across our state. Many small communities lack easy access to commercial airline service, and general aviation provides a lifeline — allowing businesses to reach clients, deliver essential goods, and fuel economic growth. For my industry, the ability to travel efficiently is key to serving policyholders in rural areas who would otherwise be underserved.

General aviation in Utah contributes more than $2 billion to the state’s economy each year and supports thousands of jobs. These airports also play a vital role in disaster response, medical transport, and emergency services, ensuring that rural Utah remains connected even in times of crisis.

Privatizing ATC could result in decisions that prioritize larger urban hubs at the expense of smaller airports, weakening the infrastructure that rural businesses and communities depend on. Keeping ATC under congressional oversight ensures that aviation policy reflects the needs of every region — not just the biggest cities.

As policymakers work to strengthen air safety, we should support reforms that protect access to general aviation, ensuring that small businesses and rural communities continue to thrive.
