Chandler Swope: Privatizing air traffic control not the answer (Opinion)

  • The recent tragic aircraft accident near Washington, D.C., has rightfully focused attention on air traffic control (ATC) staffing and technology issues, and there is certainly room for constructive, common-sense reform. But unfortunately, some have called for privatizing the ATC system, which would be unnecessarily disruptive to aviation, and especially harmful to rural communities.

For decades, I’ve worked all over West Virginia—both as a business owner and a public servant. In my construction days, I often relied on small aircraft to reach job sites in remote areas. That firsthand experience showed me how critical general aviation and local airports are not just for creating jobs or attracting investment but also critical services like responding to emergencies or transporting donated organs.

Here in the Mountain State, general aviation contributes over $1 billion to our economy each year. One shining example is Bombardier’s regional jet service center in Bridgeport—now owned by Mitsubishi—which has expanded significantly and continues to support hundreds of local jobs. Additionally, small airports keep our communities connected when disasters strike and every minute counts.

Addressing ATC staffing is essential, but privatizing the entire system would shift resources away from smaller communities. Privatization would also transfer taxpayer-funded assets to a government enshrined monopoly, not accountable to either market competition or the oversight of elected officials. Separating ATC from the government would also jeopardize its ability to coordinate with the military during a national crisis, like 9/11.

Let’s ensure local airports and our national airspace system remain healthy by preserving public oversight.
