  • Recent reports about air traffic control staffing shortages highlight the urgent need for practical solutions to ensure the continued safety and efficiency of our nation’s airspace.

As travel demands grow, addressing these challenges requires a balanced approach that strengthens our existing systems without causing unnecessary disruptions.

General aviation plays a crucial role in supporting local economies, driving business growth, and connecting communities — particularly in rural and regional areas. As business leaders who understand the importance of reliable air service, it is clear that ensuring safe and efficient air traffic operations is essential to maintaining this economic lifeline.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) manages over 50,000 flights daily, transporting more than 2.9 million passengers across 29 million square miles of airspace.

However, the FAA currently faces significant staffing challenges, with 2,371 fewer Certified Professional Controllers than the current target. This shortage impacts the capacity and reliability of the National Airspace System, affecting consumers and local economies alike.

To improve air traffic control, we need to focus on better recruitment and retention programs, modernized training, and data-driven staffing models. These solutions will improve safety and efficiency without compromising the integrity of our national airspace.

Collaboration is crucial. By bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and community stakeholders, we can develop consensus-driven solutions that benefit everyone.

This cooperative approach ensures that improvements are made without separating ATC from the existing federal framework, preserving oversight and accountability while supporting the economic growth that general aviation brings to our communities.
