I want to express my gratitude to Sen. Amy Klobuchar for her leadership in cofounding the newly launched bipartisan Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus. This initiative builds on the momentum created just a few months ago with the establishment of the Congressional Sustainable Aviation Caucus in the House, where Reps. Angie Craig and Brad Finstad were founding members. These collaborative efforts underscore a shared commitment to advancing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as both a climate solution and a boost to our economy.
SAF has the potential to significantly cut carbon emissions by up to 80%, making it a crucial component in achieving climate targets. Beyond its environmental benefits, the production of SAF offers a tremendous economic opportunity, especially for the Midwest. Meeting federal SAF production goals could lead to the creation of 224,000 jobs, $9.3 billion in labor income, and an economic output of $71 billion annually across the region. For Minnesota, this means new markets for our agricultural products and more robust economic growth.
As a drop-in fuel that doesn’t require modifications to existing aircraft, SAF provides a practical and immediate pathway for the aviation sector, including general aviation, to meet its bold commitment of net zero emissions by 2050. With bipartisan efforts in both the Senate and House, there’s a strong foundation for continued support and innovation in this field.
