Heads up runners! There is an event coming up you might be interested in. You will be able to take off for your run in a unique way. The event is called Run the Runway put on by Augusta Regional Airport.
Come March 19, you will get a chance to run where all the local flight magic happens. The exercise is not only good for your heart, but could also be good for your community, too. The event aims to raise funds for ForcesUnited.
Augusta Regional Airport Assistant Director of Marketing and Public Relations Lauren Smith says she is looking forward to what will become an annual event.
“It’s definitely a team effort, all the departments have come together for this, we work great together for these opportunities.” said Smith.
Because of this, the second runway at Augusta Regional Airport gets a new purpose. This will literally put the ‘run’ in ‘runway.’ Smith says the inspiration comes from observing other like-minded airports across the country.
“We thought this would be a perfect opportunity to provide something like that to the community here.”
However, Smith feels this effort is about more than just a fun workout.
“We want to be a big community supporter. If we don’t support the community, how do we expect the community to come fly through us?”
Smith tells FOX54 local military presence is a big reason why the airport chose ForcesUnited. It’s a community organization focused on connecting service members, veterans and their families to programs and resources.
“We wanted to work with a military foundation that supports and gives back to those who fight for us. So, we contacted ForcesUnited and asked if they wanted to partner with us for the event and they were really excited for the opportunity. We know that a lot of military like to run and participate in races, so we wanted to provide them the opportunity to raise these funds.”
Plus, runners have a chance to use this opportunity for future races.
“We are going to have the timing company have everybody wear the chip so you can use this as a prequalifier for other races. We do have trophies and metals for placements in different categories. We also will have a vendor area. All the sponsors for the event will have tables and different goodies to pass out the morning of as well.”” said Smith.
