  • ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Planes tasked with dumping fire retardant on wildfires across the state have been using Abilene Regional Airport as a base of operations to refuel and embark on firefighting runs.

Abilene’s central location gives pilots the advantage of reaching any part of the state where fires are raging in an efficient amount of time.

4 Planes cycled through Abilene Regional on Wednesday, the most seen at the airport since 2011.

1 of the planes was diverted to the Austin area while the other 3 went to fight fires in the Texas Panhandle.
