Volunteers plan to distribute 150 boxes in Cascade Locks
CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. (KOIN) — Pilots with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association helped fly in Thanksgiving food to some families affected by the Eagle Creek Fire.
Volunteers from the Oregon Food Bank teamed up with the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade charity in Washington to fly in donated boxes full of turkey and trimmings Wednesday afternoon.
Warren Hendrickson said this is the first year the Brigade pilots have flown food to Cascade Locks for the holidays.
“This is just one small example of what general aviation can do to help a community,” Hendrickson said.
Volunteers will unload the food from the planes and take it to city hall by cars and truck for distribution.
Martha Lamont — a volunteer with the Oregon Food Bank — said they plan to give out about 150 boxes locally. For an added touch, the boxes have been decorated by elementary school kids in Washington state.
“It just warms your heart,” volunteer Barrett Lamont said. “To see some of these people that you know were out of work or didn’t have any food, some of them have big families, they can have a nice Thanksgiving.”
“There is nothing like the Columbia Gorge I think it’s important to take care of the beauty of the Columbia Gorge and also the people that are here,” pilot Jeff Reese said.
