Steven Moore’s column Sept. 26 promotes privatization of the U.S. air traffic control system. He implies that aircraft owners are just a bunch of rich people flying around in our own jets. Most of us are ordinary working folks who have a passion for aviation and use our airplanes for business and pleasure.
He also implies that our air traffic control system is out of date. Modernizing to satellite-based control is well underway and will be complete in three years.
Airline flight delays are mostly caused by over scheduling by the airlines, and weather delays which will always be with us.
Financing of our current system is based on fuel taxes and results in the most efficient air traffic system in the world. Small aircraft owners are very concerned about the loss of our freedom to fly in this country, as has happened in many countries where the air traffic control system has been privatized.
