  • SURGOINSVILLE — On Saturday, Sept. 16, youth from Hawkins County were treated to rides in a General Aviation airplane.

This is an annual event sponsored by National Experimental Aircraft Association and (EAA) Chapter #442 located at the Hawkins Co. Airport in Surgoinsville.

EAA members/pilots Barry Campbell, Ed Martin, Larry Murphy and Jeff Hesoun volunteered their planes, fuel and flying time so that 36 young people between the ages of 8-17 were given a complimentary introduction to the world of aviation.

Each Young Eagle was presented with a Certificate, picture with the airplane and pilot along with a Pilot logbook.

These young people will further have their names entered into the largest logbook in the world.

Volunteers from the chapter provided support for registration, photography, preparing lunch and the usual safety logistics for an event like this.

For many of the participants, this was their first ride in an airplane and during the day volunteers provided answers to many inquiries about what is required to earn a pilot’s license and aviation in general.
