Mayor Mike Inman has designated June as “General Aviation Appreciation Month” in Macomb. He presented a proclamation to that effect Monday and brought Macomb Municipal Airport administrators before the city council to receive recognition.
The airport was represented by Macomb Airport Authority President Bill Butcher, MAA Commissioner Mick Wisslead, and Airport General Manager Lee Cobb. For the third time in its history, Macomb’s airport was recently named Illinois general aviation airport of the year. The Illinois Department of Transportation and its Division of Aeronautics selected Macomb for the honor.
Inman cited the economic impact of the Macomb Municipal Airport. He called it “a vital strategic service.”
Butcher said IDOT considers community support when making its airport awards. “The fact that our chamber of commerce brings 40 people from Macomb every year to meet with the aeronautics division and with IDOT’s director, and that we invite state directors to the annual chamber night at the airport, gets their attention,” he said.
The MAA president reminded aldermen that the airport will host a Sunday breakfast and fly-in this Heritage Days weekend. “We serve about 1,200 breakfasts,” Butcher said.
