Delaware City Council tonight (Nov. 9) voted unanimously to move forward with a multimillion-dollar project to extend the runway of the Delaware Municipal Airport.
Council approved spending about $535,000 for a local match on the largely grant-funded project to improve safety conditions at the airport by extending the runway by 800 feet.
The vast majority of the project will be funded via a $4.25 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Construction on the project is expected to begin and finish in 2016.
The airport, off Pittsburgh Drive on the city’s west side, serves an estimated 40,000 aircraft operations per year, according to city records.
