The Redding Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and the 99’s, a local women pilots organization, are once again sponsoring a day when local pilots will fly kids from 8 to 17 free of charge. The members of these organizations donate their aircraft and time to give kids the experience of flying in a General Aviation aircraft.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 9 AM to 12 noon at Benton Airfield, which is located off Placer Street in West Redding. To take a free flight a young person must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and come to Hillside Aviation on Benton Airfield. Follow the signs. Sign-ups for flights are from 8:30 AM to 10 AM. Please be prompt.
In addition to the free flights in the aircraft, kids will be able to talk to pilots about their aircraft and learn how airplanes fly. Kids who are waiting for flights will be able to try their hand at flying an airplane on the EAA Flight Simulator. There will be lots of free aviation books and magazines to take away. The kids who get to fly will receive a Young Eagles Certificate and have their photo taken with their pilot and airplane.
The Redding EAA and the 99’s sponsor two Young Eagles events each year to give free flights and stimulate young people to become interested in flying as either a career or for recreation. The Young Eagles Program was started by the National EAA in the early 90’s. Since then, local EAA chapters have flown over 1.9 million youngsters. Flying an airplane is fun and exciting and there is no better time to develop an interest in aviation than when you’re young.
