Washington, DC—National aviation organizations today applauded Kansas Governor Sam Brownback’s proclamation of September as “Aviation Appreciation Month.” In Kansas, general aviation accounts for $7.1 billion in economic activity each year and the aviation industry supports more than 47,000 jobs statewide. The Governor’s proclamation will be presented at the Wichita Aero Club Luncheon on September 25, which will be followed by the Kansas Aviation Expo on September 26 and 27.
“As the ‘air capital of the world,’ we appreciate the work of Governor Brownback and leaders in Kansans in highlighting the critical importance of general aviation to the local and national economy,” said Selena Shilad, Executive Director of the Alliance for Aviation Across America. “General aviation is a vital economic engine and supports more than 40,000 jobs in Kansas alone.”
“In addition to Wichita’s robust aircraft manufacturing economy, general aviation aircraft and local airports in Kansas are crucial in supporting local businesses and connecting communities,” said Craig L. Fuller, President and CEO of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). “We appreciate Governor Brownback’s leadership in highlighting this vital industry and form of transportation.”
“Wichita’s legacy as the innovative leader of general aviation technology has provided businesses of all sizes with an important tool to maintain busy travel schedules, increase productivity and meet with customers in person,” stated Ed Bolen, President and CEO of the National Business Aviation Association. “We thank Governor Brownback for his recognition of general aviation and hope to work with him to further cultivate the industry.”
“Kansas’s network of 140 public-use airports is an important asset to the state’s economy, agricultural production and emergency response,” said Henry Ogrodzinski, President of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO). “We are eager to continue to work with the Governor and Jesse Romo, Acting Director of the Kansas Division of Aviation, on issues related to general aviation.”
“General aviation links communities across Kansas and provides opportunities for businesses, supports economic growth, and connects communities with crucial services” said Thomas L. Hendricks, President and CEO of the National Air Transportation Association. “NATA and its member companies across the state applaud Governor Brownback’s actions in recognizing general aviation as a vital resource to the state’s competitiveness and growth.”
“Across Kansas and the United States, general aviation’s contribution to public safety is paramount,” said Matthew Zuccaro, President of the Helicopter Association International (HAI). “Law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical responders, and a number of other services rely on small aircraft, helicopters in particular, to protect communities and save lives. We thank Governor Brownback for drawing attention to this critical asset.”
