  • A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod helicopter hoisted three overdue fishermen to safety Monday from their 8-foot inflatable raft in Long Island Sound.

The Coast Guard received a call from the Suffolk County Police Department reporting that the three men had left Rocky Point at 2 p.m. Sunday and were due back at 10 p.m. but had not yet returned, according to a Coast Guard press release.

The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot rescue boat crew from Station New Haven, Conn.; a 45-foot rescue boat from Station Eatons Neck in Huntington, N.Y.; and an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod. Suffolk County also launched an air and boat search crew to assist in the search.

The Cape helicopter crew located the three boaters 5 miles east of New Haven Harbor and safely hoisted them aboard the aircraft at about 7:30 a.m. They were taken to Tweed New Haven Airport and transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
