Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines is among 70 mayors and community leaders from throughout the country who recently signed a letter expressing concern about the Federal Aviation Administration’s closing of 149 contract air traffic control towers nationwide.
The tower at Smith Reynolds Airport is on the list of closings, scheduled for June 15.
The letter was sent Thursday by the Alliance for Aviation Across America, a nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition, to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.
The letter focuses on how the towers have a significant impact on the economy and local communities, including “attracting businesses and generating millions in economic activity annually.”
