A recent article in The Arizona Republic highlighted the tremendous impact the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has on the economy of Maricopa and western Pinal counties. For the 2010 fiscal year, the airport was responsible for $685 million in economic impact as well as supporting 4,200 jobs. The article points out that such a high contribution by the airport to the local economy in 2010 was quite striking considering the nation’s economy was mired in a recession. The figures provided by the study show that on-site activity at the airport rose by 121 percent while spending at nearby related businesses experienced an increase of 86 percent from previous figures compiled in 2008.
